Mike McArthur
Born in Aitkin, Minnesota, but raised in Brooklyn Park–when it was still farmland–Mike McArthur was the smallest guy in his class throughout my school years. Mike went 11-0 as a 9th grader and won the junior high tournament in 1970. As a sophomore at Osseo High School, Mike was a very underweight wrestler at the 95-pound class, tipping the scales at a mere 86 pounds. Nevertheless, he went undefeated until the semifinals at district competition. Gaining weight and wrestling at 95 pounds in the newly created 98-pound class, Mike continued his roll all of the way to a state championship starting with a 12-2 victory over Doug Bernard of Hopkins Lindbergh, an imposing figure to Mike who did not consider himself muscular. He defeated Dave Sauter of Prior Lake 8-2 in the final. Midway through his senior year, Mike opted to wrestle at the 105-pound division in an effort to get young Jim Martinez—a future Olympic bronze medalist—in the line-up. Still wrestling as a 98-pounder, Mike lost 14-2 to archrival Fridley’s Dennis Bolkon in the district final and again at less humiliating score in the section final. However, after cruising to the 1974 state finals, this time he again met Bolkon and edged him 4-2. “My objective was to be the best wrestler I could be,” Mike says, relating why he decided to accept a scholarship offer to the University of Minnesota. As an incoming freshman, he defeated holdover Pat Neu, the Paynesville, Minnesota, wrestling great, who was experiencing a growth spurt. Mike wrestled all four years at the 118-pound weight class with a runner-up finish at the NCAA championships in 1977, a memorable 8-7 match he lost to Jimmy Haines of Wisconsin as Neu claimed a title at 134 pounds. Mike was also the 1976 Olympic alternate to his main rival, Haines. Joining him as an alternate on the freestyle team was Larry Zilverberg of Hopkins. Teammate Evan Johnson (Orono) made the 1976 Olympic Greco-Roman team along with an astounding five other Minnesotans: Brad Rheingans (Appleton), Dan Chandler (Anoka), Pat Marcy (Hopkins), Bruce Thompson (Prior Lake), and Gary Alexander (Hopkins). Suffering a broken back in 1979, Mike was runner-up in the 1980 US Open, and decided not to pursue competition any further due to the 1980 Olympic boycott by the U.S. Mike’s most memorable matches were pinning 1976 Olympic silver medalist, Alexander Ivanov of Russia in the USA-Russian Dual in Lancaster, Pennsylvania in 1977; and 1979 match World Cup match wrestling Olympic gold medalist Anatoli Belaglaso. His most enduring memory may be “a miracle to get out of Tehran, Iran” to escape the rioting over the Shah’s rule. “The Lord protected us.”
“I love the western lifestyle,” he says of roping cattle and riding horses and having spent 40 years in ministry. “God has allowed me to experience so many wonderful things.”
